Those booking into a Dubrovnik luxury hotels should be prepared for laminate hardwood floors, congested air conditioning and remnant communist-era architecture. Hotel Villa Dubrovnik is a welcome exception, sitting on a secluded waterfront cove amongst a towering forest of pine trees and mature citrus groves that give the feel of a private Adriatic estate. A former-communist mainstay for summertime vacationers, the hotel took three years to exorcize of its architectural demons via a potion of tumbled stone and sleek white facelift of its former rambling facade.
The lobby balances uber-modern decor with substantial design elements of glass and raw stone with head-on views of outlying Lokrum Island and the old town. Home to Restaurant Pjerin, a formal interior dining room with terrace offers a Mediterranean menu and alfresco bar. The main draw of summer, however, is the oceanfront beach built atop a rocky ledge that allows guests to go from striped sun lounger to Adriatic swan dive with just a single step in-between.
The Room
Rooms are airy and bright with glass doors that open to seafront balconies and interior spaces line in real walnut hardwood floors with open-style bathrooms with double-bowl sinks. As with most Croatian hotels getting a modern overhaul, design tends on the sparse like a more luxurious version of Ikea staples like wood veneer furnishings, sheer drapery and freestanding LCD TVs mounted on chrome swivel platforms. Bathrooms with counter-mounted double basin sinks and rain showers are revealed through panels of glass easily concealed with privacy curtains. All rooms adjoin spacious private sea-facing balconies with teak floors and collection of outdoor furnishings, with added Jacuzzi in larger suites. Top of the line Penthouse Villa Kolin is the best room in the house accessed through a private entrance; spread over three floors with three bedrooms each with en suite bathrooms.
